On my last trip to Talafar (FOB Sykes) there was a stack of Marvel Comic books for free on the table. OK, so they were Marvel–not the best stuff in the world but when you are away from ANY comic books …they’ll have to do.
The Free comics were donated for AAFES (Army, Air Force Exchange Service) to soldiers, to tell us that “America Supports You“. I really do appreciate the folks at Marvel for taking the time to put these comics together, especially for us. The little things companies do to show a little support goes a long way. I write this because I want to tell people that I really do appreciate Marvel’s Support for the American Soldier.
However, I’m not going to let them off easy. The story was terrible. I was reading the story, actually enjoying the story of the battle between the 1940s Captain America and Kang the Conqueror. Somehow, they all go back in time to fix this issue with Kang. The story is going good, the stuggle is getting heavy. Then, WWII Captain America sacrifices himself…in a have-to-read-twenty-times-to be-able-to-understand frame. Then, everybody lives happly ever after. Wolverine stays at the tower to watch TV, Spider-Man takes a nap, Spider-Woman takes a shower and Iron Man tells Jarvis to call someone to clean up the mess. THE END. Really.
I think that this book shows the trouble that one shot comics have…compressing a detailed and understandable story into 20 pages of comics. I do appreciate Marvel’s support and it was fun to review.
