There is something about trains and train tracks that truly capture my attention. I love to hear the distant train whistle as I walk around Fort Leavenworth. Many times, I can also hear them from inside the house. I mostly hear the nearby Union Pacific trains as they pass, but occasionally if I listen closely I can hear the BNSF line on the other side of the river. Growing up, there were several places to see railroad tracks and even a short line Railroad Company that operated in my town. It was easy to see and experience trains.
With a train, I am always impressed by the power and size when I am up close. Far away, however, I am impressed by the peacefulness of a slow moving train in the distance. There is something that cannot be described that draws me to the train.
As I look at old tracks running through an old forest, I think about the trains that once rolled over those tracks. Those tracks were not put there by chance. The expense, the man hours, and the planning to put a railroad in was not easy. If you ever wonder how hard it could be, try building a model railroad. Then, consider how hard it would be if you built one life size. There is history on those tracks. There are stories, adventures, and tragedies all along those old tracks.
Yes, there is something about trains. The next time you here a whistle or see a track remember the history, the peace and the power that the trains represent.
