As a Christian leader, Army Officer, and a blogger, I try to keep on top of current events as much as possible. There are events happening in the news constantly that many times directly impact my ministry and/or my family directly, so it is important in this day of instant information that I stay informed as much as possible. To help me manage a sense of context in my work, I use three different news apps to feed me the most current information.
The NewYork Times App is my most used news app on my iPad. From this app, I am able to read the news from a detailed level. I like the news summaries that give me a quick reference to the article. But, I also enjoy access to the full New York Times content where I can read in-depth journalism about current events. This app does require a digital subscription, but if you want to read from the leading newspaper in the world, the subscription is well worth it.
The USAToday App is a newly discovered app that has some very nice features. While I first suspected that it would be behind a pay wall, it appears—as of this writing—that it does not and USA Today has decided to go with a native add model. Reading this app simply feels as if you are reading the newspaper at home. One of my favorite features is USA Today’s use of the Gannet Company resources in local markets. For me, I am able to read stories from a hometown newspaper, The Greenville News, and keep up with news in the area of the country where I grew up.
The CNN App is on my iPad and my iPhone, where I use it primarily for notification of breaking news or updates. It is very helpful to be able to get a notification instantly of events that are happening as they are happening. While the other apps have these features, I have turned them off to prevent multiple notifications. I feel because of CNN’s need to draw viewers toward the television, they have a much timelier notification system to keep me up to date.
These are the three news apps that I use on a daily basis to keep me informed about the current events as they happen in our world. If you have other recommendations, please recommend them in the comments section.
