In the evenings when I run with my daughter, I has been interesting to see the two lines of trees outlining the old “Trolley Line”. This is the path that was once travelled by the trolley to the large train station in nearby town of Leavenworth. Leavenworth was once a growing railroad town that was fast becoming a gateway to the western United States. With that growth came a large Union station, as well as other rail lines traveling through the city. The nearby Army post used a trolley system to transport Soldiers to and from the train stations in town. As the railroads began to change and the rails were removed, the trees still outline the path where the trolley moved.
The trolley line ends at an old trolley station that is now used for offices and it is remarkable that the tree lines are still intact after many years. The Trolley Line is now lined with large oak trees which provide wonderful shade during the summer time as the spread a thick canopy overhead. I am reminded of an old road that once bordered the property of my childhood home. I am not sure about all of the details, however, the old maps show an old road that travelled by our property, that was changed one day to a road that was about 150 yards away. The road was along our fence and the path is now a drainage ditch and covered with other trees. I am happy that the Army took the time to maintain these grassy areas so that the Trolley Line remains visible.
