I went to see Star Trek: The Motion Picture last night! It has been a very long time since the last time I watched it. So, it was enjoyable to revisit the movie once again.
I love Star Trek, but I have to admit that many times, I neglect the original series. I do so simply because it seems somewhat removed from the high-gloss atmosphere and development of the newer additions to the franchise. However, to truly embrace and understand the entire Star Trek universe one must understand that original series. Therefore, under the backdrop, I felt lucky to be able to watch the movie on the big screen.
To watch the original motion picture and to enjoy it, one must put the most recent Star Trek history away for a moment. It simply cannot compete. But, I shouldn’t have to. The movie was made in 1979, with 1979 technology and expectations. The movie did what it needed to do to bring Star Trek back into the public’s mind after a decade’s absence. Through it’s success, Star Trek has multiple movies and spinoff television series with no end in sight.
That, to me, was the exciting motivation to watch the movie. I was able to see it in the theater! Where many people watched it on a DVD or even VCR tape—where I think I saw it first; I was able to see it unfold in the theater. I consider that a moment that I will not forget for a very long time.
