I received a weather alert today regarding severe thunderstorms in the area and was surprised at how hard it was to get an accurate picture of what is going on.
For years, I have watched the National Weather Service (NWS) Radar as storms passed overhead through our area. I would receive an alert an go to the radar to watch as the storm intensified and would make an assessment of whether or not to start unplugging computers and tying down patio furniture.
That was before I went to Germany. Now that I am back—it is much more difficult. There is so much detail on the radar that to see what is actually going on is a challenge. There are lines all over the place and then NWS has added the terrain map down below making the picture that more busy.
I understand the desire to give as much information as possible—but when the information cloud the main event then it is too much.
So, I have now turned to other services. My favorite has become the local ABC Station, WRIC NEWS 8. News 8 has a very simple easy to read radar that is understandable as well as includes the detail that the NWS is so concerned about.
As you can see, however, it looks like I need to turn off my computer.
