I think that Jodi Picoult has done a wonderful job toward rebuilding the disastrous launch of Wonder Woman.
I enjoyed watching Agent (Diana) Prince walking through the carnival buying souvenirs when the Wonder Woman stuff is 75% off. The quotes are like this:
Prince: “Why?”
Salesman: “Wonder Woman’s not cool, I guess.”
Prince: “Doesn’t saving the world all the time make you cool?
Salesman: “All I know is she’s never sold as well as Superman or Batman.”
The scene was funny, but it made me think how true it is. I also thought that it was good for THISbook to acknowledge that. I don’t believe that Wonder Woman will ever reach the merchandising high that Superman or Batman has received. I think even Batman is doing better than Superman right now, but I could be wrong. Is this a sexist thing? No, its a marketing thing. Boys buy more action figure stuff, boys don’t like girl stuff–it’s that simple.
But that does raise the question that I think could lead to new market of readers. What would it take to put Wonder Woman on top of the comic book sales? A major motion picture is not the answer. They help for a short time, but not long term. A strong marketing is not the answer. The answer lies with the writing. For Wonder Woman to become truly one of the big three, in sales they must place their best writers to write her. Many other Bloggers that I read are incredibly impressed with Cat Woman—why? Because of the superior writing we read month after month. Wonder Woman needs powerful writing to gain back her momentum.
Jodi Picoult writes a solid first issue with this title. I appreciate touching on the Max Lord stuff–it took a year to hear about it again, but it was good to see. There were many good little ideas through out this issue that make me look forward the issue &.

Luckily, Gail Simone is taking over this book with Issue 13 and Wonder Woman will get that amazing writing she deserves.
