Amazing Spider-man 568, begins the “NewWays to Die” arc with style. It restarts the life of Peter Parker without all of the trappings of the Spring and Summer 2008 drama concerning Aunt May or Mary Jane. The book reads as if that past doesn’t exist–and, of course, it doesn’t anymore–so why dwell on the past?
Marvel always impresses me how they are able to retell the origin story so frequently, and catching the reader up to speed into what is going on. This book is a beautiful example of this as it begins with the origin story and slides seamlessly into the beginning of the latest arc.
Of all the great storytelling that is included in this book–there are moral or editorial questions to ask and discuss. For instance:
Why are the charitable always suspected in comic books? Is it because of bias or because they are the least expected–like the clown in the horror movies.
Or
It is amazing to think about the true inner working of a Newsroom and wonder how much of what is written truly occurs as a result of the Senior Editors Bias.
Or
Wasn’t it kinda of annoying to have a Marvel self promotion ad on every other page? Marvel has many different titles going on and Spidey is the top guy to promote them. I got it, but give me a break!
But, no. there will be other posts to address these topics. What was interesting to me was the laundromat underneath Peter’s apartment: “Internet Bubble.” What a great name for a laundromat. Of course, I don’t live in New York–this maybe a real place…but what a great idea laundry and the internet–what a great use of your time! Whoever came up with that idea–should open a chain.
