When I’m out with friends, I never know what I am in store for. However, our KATUSA Soldiers led us to a trendy restaurant in Seoul on Friday night.
While this is a little more creative than I would typically enjoy, Base Camp was a fun restaurant that allowed me to relax and enjoy the company of others. Base Camp is a Korean Barbecue Restaurant where the visitors sit around a fire-pit and the wait staff will bring you food in which you grill on the table in front of you.
As you sit in the comfortable camping chairs and grill your meat, there is ample time for conversation and discussion about your day and life in general. It definitely is not a place to visit in a hurry, because the whole point of the experience is to enjoy spending time with those that you have brought with you. It is very reminiscent of the fire pits that we would sit around and enjoy in downrange and more recently at Fort Leavenworth. In fact, we plan to purchase a fire pit at our next home.
The food is brought to you ready to be cooked. As you cook the food, whoever is chosen to be the cook cuts the meat into smaller pieces and everyone eats off the grill. This is a different concept from America where everyone gets their own plate. But, it is common in Korea to share the food with those sitting around the table.
Base Camp is a very enjoyable experience and a great opportunity to spend the evening talking and getting to know the friends that have brought you to this wonderful place.
