As far as music goes, I’m not usually the “Praise and Worship†type. I have some Chris Tomlin and some other guys that I like to listen to from time to time. I’m not sure if it is considered “praise and worship†or not—but you can sing with it—but it has more depth than most of the “praise and Worship†stuff out there.
I’m definitely not a Contemporary Christian type either—to much of it is “not ready for prime time†or “let’s make it sound as much like pop as possible, but we aren’t good enough to pull it off.â€
I say all that to tell you about this new CD I picked up. They were giving CDs away at the chapel, and I recognized the name. Of course, Casting Crowns is a big name. I kinda have a little issue with hero worship and rock star status that many religious people get. But it was free. Apparently, Family Christian Stores was doing a promotion—for every pre-ordered Casting Crowns CD, they would send a copy of their debut album to soldiers overseas. (I’m actually not real sure that I appreciate being a marketing tool—I mean if you care about us, why don’t you send it with no strings. How much does it cost to copy a CD anyway?)
So I picked it up and put it in my ipod. I may listen to it from time to time or I may delete it. After thinking more about it…and the marketing angle, I may not enjoy it—simply because of the distrust from feeling used. Kinda taints the message doesn’t it?
