This morning, my kids celebrated the 65th Anniversary of Disney’s Cinderella. The anniversary was actually yesterday (15 February 1950)—but I thought about it too late in the day to tell them. But, it was a reason for them to have a party, watch the movie and eat Pop Tarts for breakfast! As I watched them enjoy the movie, I thought about how many other children have enjoyed this movie for 65 years.
We have very few staples in our society. These staples are passed down from generation to generation and seen or experienced by nearly everyone. We are constantly upgrading and changing things to get more and more people to buy what we are selling. However, there are some things in this world that are good enough as they are. They can stand on their own as Masterpieces, enjoyed by people from generation to generation. Cinderella is one of them. Yes, Disney is producing a live-action rendering of the Cinderella story–and I am looking forward to it–but after the hype is gone, the animated original will still hold our attention.
Disney’s animated Cinderella is timeless. It has struck the hearts of children around the world and continues to do so. We shouldn’t take this timelessness lightly. Very little art survives for 65 years. There are only a handful of movies that come close to this milestone. Cinderella touches our hearts in a way no other movie can and become a timeless treasure in our life.
