One of my favorite board games is the game Monopoly by Hasbro. There is something exciting about moving your piece around the game board and collecting properties. It is equally exciting to see other land on your property where they must pay you and the more houses and hotels that you have the more money they give you. Unfortunately, this does not always work out. More often than not, I am the one landing on other people’s properties as they are adding more and more houses and hotels until I am completely bankrupt. About halfway through the game, I begin to panic and worry as I see my quest for control of the board shift to someone else.
Our lives are a lot like the game Monopoly, except it isn’t a game. There are real dollars and real lives at stake. We live our lives trying to get ahead only to find ourselves focused on gaining more and more money, so we can survive if someone else begins to “control the board”. The Bible says in Hebrews 13:
“Your life should be free from the love of money. Be satisfied with what you have, for He Himself has said, I will never leave you or forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5, HCSB)
Let us all claim the promise that God will never leave us, no matter what the financial outlook maybe. Let us not be so focused on money that we forget that God has placed us where we are to share his love with those around us.
