I was waiting for the moment when I would address Manga in this blog. Typically, it doesn’t cross my mind. However, when it is passed on during Free Comic Book Day; it is fair game.
I read the first of the selections in the TokyoPop book offered last weekend. The book gave me an opportunity to look at Manga in a new light. I’ve never read a Manga story before, so this gave me the oportunity to look inside.
As I read, my first thought was that Manga is the new Archie Comics. In some cases, they deal with the same high school problems, just a little more indepth. The biggest difference overall is that Archie comic books seek to be wholesome in their content. This is not to say that all of Manga is immoral, but it is not a value that is set to achieve. I would recomend that Archie comics enter this market of comic books, because more than any other comic book company Archie Comics are the best suited to move into that arena.
I was not particularly entertained by this book. This was not because I thought it was bad writing, but because I’m not in high school any more and it didn’t relate.Â
