March 12, 2016 is Genealogy Day. Originally created in 2013, “by Christ Church, United Presbyterian and Methodist in Limerick, Ireland to help celebrate the church’s 200th anniversary”, Genealogy Day is a day to encourage others to research their genealogies and add to their family trees.
For about ten years or so, I have been building my family tree and the hobby becomes more captivating me the more I work on it. I enjoy working on Genealogy because it provides me with a link to my family’s heritage. I am able to understand where my family came from and who I am related to. I also enjoy researching my ancestors because in the process of discovering my ancestors, I learn more about the history of the United States and the World.
Outside of the historical and family discoveries that are substantially rewarding, I enjoy the process of genealogy. Genealogy is an investigative hobby. There is a process to discovering and solving the mysteries that occur in every family tree. I enjoy the challenge of uncovering these mysteries and putting the pieces together to solve the puzzles in the genealogies themselves. Not only is solving the puzzle gratifying from an ancestral pride aspect, but also it is gratifying because I was able to solve a complicated puzzle. This is one of the true joys to the hobby itself.
It doesn’t take much to start researching your genealogy—nothing but a desire to start. You can start with what you know and move back from there. Genealogy is a great hobby and I would encourage any one to take the time to try it out—maybe on this Genealogy Day!
