Last night, as I was checking my social media feeds before bed, I discovered through a Runchat Facebook post that today, June 1, was Global Running Day. “Global Running Day is a day for people around the world to celebrate the joys of running” though running and sharing “your passion for the sport and inspire others to get moving.” I was excited to take part in this event and to spend some time simply enjoying running.
So how did I spend Global Running Day?
First, early in the morning, I ran a 3.5 mile loop that I have become accustomed to running. It was nice to run during the day’s most active time for runners. It is always a motivation to have others on the route with me. To have a smile, or even to encourage someone else running the opposite direction is always a motivation to pick up the pace or, on a hard day, just keep going.
Then throughout the day I participated in an all-day edition of RunChat. During this special chat @TheRunChat on Twitter posted a question for discussion every hour of the day using the hashtags #RunChat and #GlobalRunningDay. Participation allowed me to read tweets and comment on running tweets from new and old friends that I have made through each Sunday Night’s RunChat.
Finally, I was able to run with my daughter, Elizabeth Anne, as we are training for a four-mile race of July Fourth. I have enjoyed running with her this year, so it was definitely a great opportunity to do a speed workout with my best running buddy on Global Running Day.
As you can see, I had a great Global Running Day. I am very happy that someone decided to organize the day on June 1 of each year. I am already looking forward to running again and celebrating next year’s celebration!
