One of my many interests is to track hurricanes. During hurricane season, I set up my software to track each hurricane that goes across the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico.
If you have watched the TV hurricane coverage over the past several years, you will know that the “storm surge” is probably the most dangerous part of a hurricane coming ashore. It is the storm surge that breaks down the piers, knocks the legs off of elevated homes, and destroys the buildings on the coast.
From Sunday (8FEB09) Morning’s lectionary reading, Psalm 93 was listed.
1Â The Lord reigns; he is robed in majesty;
the Lord is robed; he has put on strength as his belt.
Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.
2Â Your throne is established from of old;
you are from everlasting.3Â The floods have lifted up, O Lord,
the floods have lifted up their voice;
the floods lift up their roaring.
4Â Mightier than the thunders of many waters,
mightier than the waves of the sea,
the Lord on high is mighty!5Â Your decrees are very trustworthy;
holiness befits your house,
O Lord, forevermore. (Ps 93, ESV)
In this Psalm, we see that more powerful is God, over even the storm surge. When the storms of life plow through our lives there is a God who is mightier than the strongest of waves!
