One building that has caught my attention since arriving in Leavenworth, Kansas has been the old Ward’s building on Delaware Street. This six story building was designated by the November-December 2007 issue of “Kansas Preservation” Magazine as the only “skyscraper” in downtown Leavenworth. Built in 1908, the building housed “the largest fabricator of metal products west of the Mississippi. Later, the company sold hardware, cutlery, and sporting goods.” Montgomery Ward, then, occupied the building from 1930 to 1970.
The sign on the very top of the building reminds those who walk down the streets of downtown to never forget who once occupied this grand building through the Great Depression and World War Two. As I understand the local history here, much of the business left the downtown area to the new mall in the area. This building stands first as a monument to the great downtown businesses of yesteryear. However, I believe, it calls to future businesses to return to downtown. I believe that one day, these buildings—built long ago and still in wonderful shape—will be filled again with modern businesses. I truly believe that day is coming and will bring life once again to the small towns across America. A building such as this one will be a hallmark of that future.
This beautiful building has been preserved very well and towers over the down area of Leavenworth. It is a sight to see as I walk in and out of the little shops.
