Call it a marketing ploy if you wish, but DC has done very well with the $1 comic that set the stage for last year’s Infinite Crisis.
I noticed that DC has a similar $1 issue to introduce the world after the Crisis–probably because the 80 page prequel to Infinite Crisis was such a good issue. The price certainly was a motivator to pick the book up, but the storyline introduced the series superbly. I liked how the story dropped hints and set the stage for what was to come.Â
Several months ago, I read the Identity Crisis hardback (I think it is in paperback now, I recommend it). A large portion of the $1 book was in there, which gives much credibility to the $1 comic. For $1, DC could’ve simply put some junk together and call it an introduction–and even get away with it. I’m glad that they put in a full effort in this book.
I reccomend that when DC publishes future $1 books, you pick them up. It will be a good story at a good price, and will set you up for the next big story in the DC Universe.
