The special meal in the CG’s Mess was Steak. It was reported throughout the camp that the CG’s Mess was serving steak for lunch. No official announcement was made—it was simply discussed in nearly every conversation for about two days. It is a big deal when the DFAC, or in our case the CG’s Mess, has steak. This is a welcome departure from the normal cafeteria food and great fun just to be a part of the good times available when steak is provided. It is enjoyable to see everyone put down their work for an hour and walk to the DFAC or CG’s Mess to enjoy a steak with everyone else who also made the trip.
When it neared lunch time, some sections left early to claim an early spot in line. And, believe me, there was a line. Even in the cold weather, the line reached out the door down the long sidewalk and into the neighboring, but empty, street. Thankfully, when I arrived the line was moving rather quick, because the steaks when ready. This was until I was about half the way up the sidewalk, when the line stopped moving forward.
After a few moments of waiting, a Sergeant walked out and began asking people if they did not want steak they could go to the front of the line. The steaks were still being prepared as the first batch had run out.
Some chose to remain in the line, I chose the Shrimp Alfredo—because I had work to do! I guess I will catch the meal another time..
