Monday: I walked out later in the day and walked by the “Tomahawk Range”. Here in the 2ID, our long standing patch an “Indianhead” and our location is named after Mitchell Red Cloud, a Native American Medal of Honor winner from the Korean War. Needless to say, the Native Americans are honored here. One of the traditions that we have is of small gatherings of people throwing tomahawks on this range. I passed by the other day, when the board was being replaced. All of the funds for this is provided through Membership in the CG Mess.
Tuesday: I travelled south to Camp Humpreys for a training session. As we travelled through city after city, I felt like I was traveling through downtown Atlanta for two straight hours. Several times during our trip home, we had to pass through the frequent tolls booths on the highway that by-passes Seoul.
Wednesday: While I wait on my household goods to arrive, my main source of entertainment is by watching movies on my iPad or on my computer. I have watched nearly an entire season of Star Trek: Enterprise over the last week or so. I have been wanting to watch it for several years, but did not quite have the time. This month, I have had that time in the evenings.
Thursday: After a long hot but beautiful day, I looked out my window to see the skyline highlighted by the afternoon sun. It is amazing to me that so many people live in such a small area. There are so many people that they must live in the high rise buildings to be close to the jobs. These buildings are just outside the gate of the Army Post, so you can really see the difference of the wooded Army Post and the surrounding city. I understand that Uijeongbu quadrupled in size in just fifteen years. This was once a rural area.
Friday: For lunch, we travelled off-post to a noodle shop. The noodle shop was a wonderful experience! The food was absolutely delicious. We each ordered a spicy pasta noodle soup with oysters. The tricky piece of the trip was that we ate cross-legged at the floor level table and I am still rusty with my chow-stick skills. The food was definitely worth the pain and awkwardness I endured.
I have had a great week of experiences here in Korea. I look forward to many more adventures to come.
