Have you ever considered how much we depend on electricity? Have you ever considered how much we are becoming dependent on the internet?
Have you ever considered what might happen if we lose power?
This isn’t a doomsday question, necessarily. This is a practical one. I was reminded this week about how one website being down can shut off communication. As the website was blocked there was no contact with the owners because that website contained the phone numbers for those owners. The only way to find those numbers was to search on another website.
Is this how we keep in touch with our friends and loved ones? To be honest? I cannot remember the phone numbers to anyone but my wife’s phone number—which incidentally, is an iPhone. And most of my communication with people in the US is through the internet. It is quick, but is it always reliable? 90% of the time it is. But, what about the other ten percent?
I guess the lesson learned is to have another way of contact with the people you love. Many times, when I have had an interruption in service has been a time when there was a weather emergency in the area or at the coincidental time of a personal stressor. It is important that we look for ways to stay connected off the internet because we never know when the off chance of losing it will occur.
Yes, enjoy the internet. Enjoy social media. But keep a backup plan, Justin case.
