Off the beaten path in Platte County, Missouri there is a little monument and park honoring Veterans. The park is at the end of the Main Street in Platte City, the county seat for Platte County. It adds a nice touch to the small city center.
Inside this little park is an anchor from the USS Platte which was named after the Platte Rivers. The boat that once used the anchor served in the Persian Gulf War (Desert Shield and Storm). It is a nice tribute to the Sailors who have served our country. The anchor was placed in this park in 2015 as “a memorial to all of the ships named USS Platte and to the men and women who have served the United States of America in Maritime service.”
These little monuments serve as a great opportunity to honor those who have served, but also to teach the next generations about the battles that have been fought in our country’s history—in hopes that we do not follow the same paths that led us to war, unless absolutely necessary, and quickly resolve those wars when we are forced to engage in them.
This little park area overlooks the Platte River and includes a picnic shelter. I am happy to see the pride that the community places in this little monument as it was well maintained. I took these photos in February, and even in the cold days of winter the park was a beautiful peaceful spot to visit.
