On Social media we, as Chaplain and Soldiers, need to understand that we have expectations online as well as in real life. There are three ways to maintain your reputation while online. use the acronym PAT.
Professional: First, Always think professionally. As a professional, we are to act according to our profession 24 hours a day. This doesn’t stop when we go home. This doesn’t stop when we go to Wal-Mart. This doesn’t stop when we are online. We are expected to act like a professional.
Think about what we put online. Does it reflect a professional image? Are our interactions conducted in a professional manner?
Being professional is our first step to managing our reputations online.
Affirm: A second step to managing our reputations online is to always b affirming. This doesn’t mean that we necessarily always agree with others online; but it does mean that we are always positive and affirming others as we interact with them online.
We’ve all heard the phase; “You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.” This is especially true online. It is not helpful to be aggressive and an anger filled in any post. What is helpful are people who are positive and offering contributions to promote good will.
Trustworthy: The final point in managing our reputation online is to build trust. We all need to be trustworthy. We are people whom he American people give much respect to. We should not take this opportunity lightly. We should be people that encourage trust in our nation’s fight force through the way we walk down the road, interact with store clerks, and engage people online. Everyone can see nearly everything we do. We must understand this concept—life isn’t particularly private anymore. We need to take step to be trustworthy in all of our actions online and off.
This is a simple formula for maintaining our reputations online. I love the internet—I love the fact that each of you can get to know me through many ways: email, twitter, and here at chaplainandrews.com. But, we all must safeguard our reputations and steer clear of harmful activities. One way of doing this is by being professional, being affirming, and by be trustworthy.
