As I browsed through a list of interesting National Days of the Year, I discovered that today, December 3, 2015, is National “Roof Over Your Head Day”. It is a simple reminder to be thankful for the blessing of having a roof over our heads. Many people probably think that this is a trivial day, but for many in our world, a roof is an exceedingly great blessing.
Most Americans live in a house or an apartment or other type of dwelling place. Except for the occasional homeless person that we see, we forget that there are people in our world that live without this dwelling place. It is easy to take it for granted when everyone we know has a roof over their heads. This is why we must take the time to reflect on the blessing that it is.
A couple of years ago, I began thanking God for the smallest of blessing—I took time to thank God for the food I eat, the friends that I have, and the house that I live in. These were the simplest of items to be thankful for. As I began to build a habit of thanking God for the simplest of things, I began to be thankful in a new way. I began to see my home as a blessing rather than an entitlement.
On this day of celebrating the roof over my head—I am grateful that I am warm and dry under this roof. And I pray that I will be continually generous to those less fortunate than I.
