We said our goodbyes to two of the most important parts of my life here in Columbia, SC during these monumental past six months.
While I was here for the Chaplain Captain Career Course, I was able to sit in a local church nearly every Sunday. The church we attended was Shandon Baptist Church. Being right outside the gate of Fort Jackson, this church provided wonderful ministry to me as a Soldier, but also to me as a person. I can not begin to tell you how remarkable this ministry was and how it impacted my life during this short time. I can honestly say that this is one of the finest churches that I have ever been in—from the children’s ministry to the preaching on Sunday morning. Every aspect of our time here was special. It was hard to let it go this morning—but, I also felt so encouraged that I’m recharged to return to day to day duties with more spiritual energy and excitement.
I also said good by to my parents. During these short months, I have been able to spend time with them a little more often. Definitely a little more than I have been in previous years—or will in the near future. But these months marked a time of transition for them as well. In August, they moved out of their home—and my childhood home—in Laurens, SC to their new home be in Rock Hill, SC. This trip will always be remembered by this transition and by the blessing of being able to be a small part of it—when I miss so many other big family events.
It was a reflective day. The sermon this morning was a commentary of the story of the Pearl of a Great Price (Mt 13:45-46). The sermon reminded me of why do I do what I do? Why do continually pick up my family and move them from place to place? Because, I have found a pearl—a thing of great value—I have found Christ. I have sold everything to buy it. And I will go where He leads.
