This week marks the 25th anniversary of the tragic explosion of the Space Shuttle “Challenger”.
This is my entry in my personal journal from 28 January 1986, edited only to make clearer reading:
Tragedy struck the nation today as the NASA Space Shuttle “Challenger” exploded one minute after lift off at 11:38 EST.
It happened during lunch.
As I ate lunch S.T. said; “The Space Shuttle blew up!”
We said with doubt; “You’re kidding right?”
He said; “Go see for yourself.”
As I went to the high school A.V. Room thoughts like “I wonder what happened!” [where on my mind.] When I got there, I watched in awe as the network tape was replayed. The crew all died. 6 NASA members and the first civilian, a teacher went up t make a crew of 7. The crew was made up of many different kinds of Americans. The news said that it was a totally American crew. The nation grieves for the heroes today.
