This Sunday afternoon, I am sitting in my chair squinting through the bright sunlight that is flooding our living room. While the sun poses a minor inconvenience, I am happy to have the sun shining for once. Germany has recently had numerous rainy or overcast days in a row.
Seeing the sun and appreciating the sun makes me realize that I have taken the sun for too much for granted. In El Paso, Texas the sun shines over 200 days a year. You begin to expect that it will always be that way. I remember during our first year there, in 2013, we would go months without seeing a single cloud. Now, in Germany, this winter has seemed as if the opposite is true. Even today began with a thick blanket of fog. We didn’t begin to see evidence of sunshine until lunch time.
Now, even as I write this, the sun has now gone behind a cloud. I hope it isn’t days before I see it again. As it does, I am reminded again not to take sunshine for granted. I want to take every moment to get outside and enjoy the sunshine.
