One of my favorite adventures to take are those that are nearly right out my front door. As I travel to different cities around the country, I am always amazed that the local people have neglected the attractions in their own city. We all long to take an exotic trip around the world, but neglect the local. We seem to think that we will get to it one day, but never take time to plan for it. This year, I challenge you to do some traveling in your own area this year.
There are three steps to travel more this year.
First, I recommend that you print a map, draw a circle around your home, and notice all of the attractions in that area. Look at the area with fresh eyes. Look for historical monuments, places, and even notations. Look also for antique stores and older parts of town. Pay attention to any state parks or government building, as many times these have been repurposed from historical buildings. Take time to notice cemeteries, particularly if your family history is deep in the area, these cemeteries can offer much information about the local history.
Once you have an idea about your area, take time to research the attractions, no matter how small. Many times this can be done by doing a quick internet search. It is amazing how many places and events have been documented online. If there is nothing found online, then the true adventure begins as you should plan to visit the local library and begin doing detailed research of the area. From your research, you will begin to see how amazing the history of your local area is. There is a gold mine of information available if you take the time to dig it up.
Finally, go. Take a trip to visit the place that you have discovered. Every trip costs us something—you have put it the time to research it, so enjoy the visit. Be careful not to rush through the sites. Take notes on what you have seen and, of course, take pictures—these place make great Instagram subjects.
Seeing your local area can be a marvelous way to travel and see the world. If you plan, research, and paid attention to the smallest of details, you could find yourself traveling every weekend. You will be amazed at what you will find!
