Time has a way of slipping away before you know it. I was looking back at my journal and noticed an entry on April 3, 2016 discussing how I would be running the “Rock the Parkway Half-marathon” that weekend. I plan on writing a detailed account of that race in another post, but the fact remains that reading that post feels as if a life time has taken place since I wrote that—even though it was just two weeks away.
That little moment is a reminder of how important it is to keep a journal. There are so many different moments in everyone’s life that simply blow away if not captured in a journal. Even though I write in my journal nearly every day, there are many more moments that I have missed because they are not captured. Writing a journal does not mean that you capture all of the moments and the feelings, but it does help you capture the most important ones.
If you keep a journal, take some time to see what I mean. Take a moment to read some older entries, to relive the victories and reflect on the hardship. Skim through the journey that has brought you this far. Take a moment to understand why you write. I find myself doing this nearly every time the Army moves me, because we have to move the boxes where the journals are stored. I am able to sit for a moment to browse. It is those times that I am so grateful that I journal—because time flies.
