I recently stepped into the world of “smart phones”.
I haven’t had one before—we were in Germany and “smart phone” were still very expensive—then we got here and entered a contract with a similar cell phone contract: then it came time to renew…
Monica and both got a basic Samsung Galaxy “smart phone”.
Over the last several weeks, I have tried several different—actually many different apps for my phone and I have settled on some apps that I use frequently.
1. My favorite is the Dairy app for keeping a diary. I think the developers would like for it to operate more socially and work also as some sort of calendar. However, I like to use it simply as a diary. It syncs with an online diary at dairy.com; they told me that they are working on a printing function. But, I really like the simplicity of writing anywhere about anything—for just me to see.
2. Another favorite of mine is Scanner Radio. Linked to RadioReference.com, this app allows the listener to hear thousands of different scanner frequencies around the world—with a concentration on the U.S. I used this much during my trip to Baltimore, where I could listen to the feeds from home or the feeds in the Baltimore area. It is nice to be able to listen to what is going on even away from my radio.
3. The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association app is another favorite. The app has a daily devotion, a radio station (that I listened to in my home town, so it’s nice to hear it again), sermons, and many other features that inspire me to increase my faith and reach out to others and share God’s love. Billy Graham has been a hero of mine for years—since I was in high school—it is good to continually be inspired by his ministry.
4. The next would be The Weather Channel app. I’m not completely sold on this one, however, but it is the best that I have found for my needs. To be honest, I’m not sure what I want on it…except I like to be able to access forecasts and some video content. As much as I use accuweather.com, the accuweather app was a little bit too big and chewed up too much of my phone’s memory—to do what the weather channel did for less memory. I get a sick feeling by not using accuweather—I’m loyal to them, but not this time.
5. I have to say Facebook is one of my favorites. Before, I got the phone, I wasn’t the most faithful with posting. Now, I’m able to post and read much more often. In fact, I kept close tabs on Hurricane Irene through Henry Margusity’s feed—I read him every morning any way—I might as well keep up with him through the day.
I use several other apps for different reason, but those are my most used. As I find more and test more, my list will change—but this is what I am using today.
