Good Grief! This is exactly what I said yesterday that the Free Comic Book Day offers should NOT be!
I was looking forward to reading this comic book about the Lone Ranger. I had read some good reviews while I was in Iraq, but was skeptical about the “For Mature Audiences” rating. I was looking forward to being able to see for myself.
As I read, the story began with a Spiderman-like moral “Creed.”” I was impressed, maybe the comic book wasn’t going to be that bad. Then, I turned the page to find 6 full page ads from the comic book publisher. I know Dynamite Entertainment is not as strong as DC or Marvel, but they could’ve gained more of my respect if they hadn’t waisted my time with this 8 page story. The book is even a flip book with “Battlestar Galactica: Season Zero”, so I’m definately not turning the book over to see what these writers are going to do with 8 more pages.
Dynamite missed an oportunity to draw in this new reader to their books. If they had took the risk of publishing an entire book, I could have gotten a feel of the story. I may have even been motivsated to buy it. Free Comic Book Day could be a wonderful advantage for these publishing houses, if they would just try to risk a little more.
