Several years ago, I was working on several projects for work and for personal and caught myself wishing that I could sit down with a subject matter expert to learn about the topic I was working with. I am not sure what the topic was but I think it possibly was related to preaching. It was during that time that I realized that if I picked up an expert’s book, I could read nearly everything that the person had to say about the subject.
James Burke said; “When you read a book, you hold another’s mind in your hands.” I have found this quote to be remarkably true. If I had the opportunity to talk to one of the great thinkers and experts in an area, they would only answer my questions. However, if I read their book, I could be able to understand their entire concept of thought. I can learn the intricacies of the subject and even get to the point where, if I was able to speak with the expert, I could ask questions of clarification and not simply basics.
So, I read. I wish I could read more, because this is the one true way to get the knowledge from the expert. I try to read one fiction, one nonfiction, and listen to an audible book at a time. Sometimes it takes me longer to get through books that way, but I want to get so much read that I sometimes overdue it.
I would be interested to know what you are reading and how you schedule your reading in the comments. I look forward to hearing from you!
