On the way to and from work each day, I’ve been making use of my audible.com subscription. Some of the books, I have started were rather long. But, I would never have read them otherwise—simply because of time. Now, I spend an hour a day (or more, if I make two trips) listening to some very good books.
While at Fort Jackson, was able to listen to “Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy: A Righteous Gentile vs. the Third Reich”—a fascinating book about Dietrich Bonhoeffer. This motivated me to continue with the subscription to more and more books. The adventure is exciting!
I finished “Roger Williams and the Creation of the American Soul: Church, State, and the Birth of Liberty” yesterday morning. Both the Bonhoeffer book and the Roger Williams books were rather long, but well worth the education that I received through listening to them. While the Roger Williams book was started in Columbia and interrupted several times while working through it—the book continually held my attention with thought provoking questions regarding my personal views of liberty and what that meant to the early authors of American Liberty.
I started “The Starfish and the Spider: The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations” this morning and I am already anxious to hear more about decentralization in organizations and leadership styles.
Following this book, I plan a rather large listening project as I listen to “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany”. This will include over 57 hours of listening. But, for an hours a day it will take around 10 weeks to include listening on Sundays. Again, I would never have time to read books like thse—but now I’m taking advantage of the time I spend in my car.
