When I was younger, my father and I would load grass clippings, vegetable table scraps, and even truck loads of horse manure into a large pile behind our house.   Under our kitchen sink would be a compost bucket to dump onto the pile. Even with our large yard, we would make sure we had the grass catcher attached to the mower. Occasionally, we even throw in some worms to help it process faster. We would save every biodegradable product to place on the pile. This pile would then compost into fertilized dirt to go around the many different plants in his garden.
I learned through this experience how to recycle as much as possible.
But there is more to do.
When I was at Fort Campbell, the post require that we have a recycle bin to place our recyclable material in. We would put or newspapers, our milk jugs, and any other “clean” paper or plastic to be picked up to be recycled. Communities all around the US are starting to do this. These products can be recycled to help preserve the natural resources that we use for our many packaging and paper products.Â
But, we can do more.
There is so much more we can be doing for the environment. From reducing the amount of electricity we use to cooking more of our meals without the amount of packaging that is produced my fast food restaurants.
This week, I will be writing a series of posts on environmental responsibility. There are two main environmental events this week. On Wednesday, 22 April 2009, there is Earth Day–a day of focus on environmental issues, and on Friday, 24 April 2009, there is Arbor Day–a days specifically focused on planting trees and helping the environment through reforestation.
I look forward to spending some time looking at this topic and I hope you do as well.
