During an interview with the New York Times, former President Jimmy Carter said “My belief in the resurrection of Jesus comes from my Christian faith, and not from any need for scientific proof.” I was happy to see this quote because, many times our culture has a problem with faith.
In 1 Peter 1:8-9 Paul writes:
“Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” (1 Peter: 8-9, ESV) THAT is what true faith is. Believing, not seeing. Believing because you know it is true. This is heresy in the modern world–but that is what makes it so amazing.
Having faith that believes without seeing places the trust and hope in God. Yes, I believe there should be a foundation, but that foundation is in scripture. This is why having an understanding of a Bible that is inerrant is so important–because for there you have some degree of left and right limits in building that faith. The Bible has been proven to be true time and time again–while there continue to be skeptics. If we are to grow in our faith–we must grow in our believing and not seeing. Oftentimes in my morning prayers times, I am amazed by the fact that God hears my small voice and, to some degree, even reads my mind as I pray silently. This is faith. It is wonderful. It is risky. But, I would bet my life on it.
