“The Country Woman’s Sunflower Club met at the home of Mrs. Epley, October 19, 1916, in the form of a Ghost Party.”
Reported “The Leader-Courier” newspaper from Kingman, Kansas on October 27, 1916. This little article caught my attention as I browsed the papers this evening.
As I read the article, I read that the club had a wonderful evening dressing up, enjoying ghost stories, games, and contests. From the greeting at the door by a ghost through the finishing of the pumpkin pie it is clear that these ladies had a wonderful time!
I always have a wonderful time reading the local stories from the newspapers of 100 years ago because the life was so much like ours, yet so very different. It was a world of war far away, a Presidential election approaching, and people enjoying being around others. However, it was a time without the internet and television. There were some things, then, that needed to improve, but there were some things that we need to go back to.
This “Halloween Ghost Party” is a wonderful example of some of the things that people would do for fun before entertainment was piped into our homes through TV and communication occurred through face to face talking rather than online texts.
Dear Mrs. Epley hosted a delightful party for her guests, one that is envied one hundred years later.
