I find it more and more important to read and to keep up with the speed of life. Life is moving very fast and it is literally impossible to keep up with everything that is happening. I try my best to keep up with what is going on with things that I am interested in. I do this mainly through reading and listening to podcasts. This reading opens the doors to many other places than I would have ever found on my own.
One example of these doors opening happened this afternoon. While I was reading the New York Times online, I read an article by Sheila Marikar titled “Los Angeles Churches Make Worship…Hip?”. The article mentioned a pastor named Erwin McManus. McManus leads Mosaic—a contemporary church in LA. I was interested in his preaching style and his emphasis on contemporary cultural references and taking at face value the fact that we are reaching a culture that does not know the Bible.
After reading the article, I wanted to see if McManus had written anything, so I Googled his name, which brought me to his bio, church, and his TED talk. After watching couple of minutes, I was further intrigued by his message about being an artist—which happened to remind me of The Accidental Creative. He also mentioned that he was a writer, so I turned to Amazon.com and found his Author page.
In a span of minutes, I was thinking about much more than the article. I was thinking about new ways of doing ministry and new ways to reach Soldiers through the Chapels. And it all opened up through the reading of the newspaper.
