One of the things I do as a Chaplain is to remind people that there is a God that loves them. So, I encourage you, if you know a Soldier, send them something that reminds them that God loves them.
At times, it is nice to have something to hold.
The Catholics, in many ways, have this right. I don’t believe necessarily in “Praying the Rosary”, but a good Catholic Chaplain once taught me that the Rosary is simply a tool to guide your prayers. This can then translate into other things as well. I have a bible verse medallion on my dog tags. This helps me remember that God is there.
Reminders connect a Soldier to the roots.
They have the power to bring life in perspective by reminding us that there are people that we are apart of, that love us and that are praying for us. I recommend sending something that is a reminder of your commitment to support the Soldier.
On my desk, I have a picture on my desk of a man praying. This is a remined of my first priority to seek God in all things and to teach Soldiers to reach out to God. This was given as a secret Santa gift once, I still have no idea who sent it, but it stays on my desk and it is a great reminder.
Find a reminder that suits the person.
It could be a standing cross, or a small framed picture. I also have a picture of Billy Graham preaching in the cover of Life magazine on my wall reminding me to preach the gospel. Reminders are incredibly important to the Spiritual health of the Soldier.
I, again, encourage you to send a spiritual reminder to your Soldier downrange. It is a great way to place in their hands something that will call their attention to the wonderful grace and hope in Jesus Christ.
