In issue number 8 of the U.S. 1 Comic Book Series, the writer, Al Milgrom, take the time to develop several concepts.
First, Milgrom build the tension between Sweet Mary–the waitress and Taryn “Down the Highway”–the truck driver girl. Milgrom also develops the story of the truck that is mentally connected to its driver–U.S. The third item this story builds is the identity of Midnight. We’ve heard about her and had our suspicions, and it is not Taryn. We’ll have to find out next issue.
This issue, more than the others, stuck out for me as corny. I understand some sad humor…possibly it was the era of comics, or an attempt to make the story enjoyable. The story itself wasn’t bad–some of the corny jokes were. The were so bad that the notes from the narrator even said they were. I don’t think they added at all to the story.
It is nice, though, to see the series begin to answer some questions as the series is coming to a close.
