On my way home Sunday, I stopped by the Platte City McDonald’s for my traditional post-race meal. After waiting for the food and fixing my drink, I began to walk out the door to my truck. It was then that I look over my shoulder in the seating section.
On the seating area wall was a beautiful mural showing various views of Kansas City, Missouri. The probably unnoticed mural shows Union Station, a riverboat, and the Power and Light District, among other recognizable scenes from the nearby city. The mural would not be complete without Ronald McDonald sitting on the moon—looking strangely out of place. Some of the features are emphasized through a slight three-dimensional effect.
I first was surprised to find the mural, because it was impressive for a small town McDonald’s. But, I was slightly disappointed that the mural did not reflect some of the features of Platte City rather than Kansas City. Understandably, this McDonald’s was the first McDonald’s offered to travelers on I-29 South from Saint Joseph, so the market is probably more Kansas City traffic than Platte City. With that said, however, the effort to place the mural could have been a great opportunity to display the little town to the Kansas City market. Overall, however, the mural is a nice addition to the restaurant.
The Platte City McDonald’s is very nice. The red painted roof makes the older building stand out and the interior is clean. The added touch of the mural makes the restaurant a pleasant place to visit.
