I was in class today and during one of the breaks, I asked the teacher about his self-study that led to the development of him teaching the class I was in. I explained that during my next assignment to Korea, I will be separated from family. This separation could provide a little more free time to pursue a self-study of my own. I really wanted to know how he got started on his study and how that developed over time. He gave me some very wise advice as I begin. He said to ask myself: “What problem am I trying to solve?”
The idea of finding a solution to something never crossed my mind. I actually can ask that question in many different areas. For instance, what problem am I trying to solve in genealogy? Alternatively, what problem am I trying to solve in a devotional author study? Or even a Bible Study. Answering this question could guide many different pursuits as I seek to discover more through self-study.
The self-study in question is a study of social media. While I am knowledgeable in social media, the subject continues to interest me and motivate me to know more and use social media in more innovative ways. I think if I am asked about problem am I trying to solve through a self-study, I think the biggest question on my mind is regarding how we can use the quickly evolving tool of social media to reach people for Christ and to communicate the gospel to the world. While this is an overarching pursuit, I think a self-study should begin with smaller bites, broken down into manageable chunks. I will keep you posted on how the study goes.
