Our Time Warner Internet Service went down unexpectedly yesterday afternoon and was down until this afternoon. This wouldn’t be a big deal except for the fact that our entire life is online—or connect online.
Monica first told me about the outage when I tried to contact her about something I was seeing in Kansas City. Typically, we use Facebook Messenger to communicate because our T-Mobile cell phone service doesn’t pick up that well in the house. She had to text me a message!
Then as I tried to send her photos of what we were seeing—we couldn’t because of the outage.
Later in the evening, we struggled to get online to send some emails that needed to be sent and read some information that we needed to read. I also posted a blog post using a personal hotspot from my cell phone. We also could not watch TV. We don’t have cable—which wouldn’t have mattered because it was the cable that went out. We use the internet to watch TV through Hulu, Netflix, and Sling, None of these are available when the internet goes out. Things were getting hard.
This morning, we were unable to get caught up with the news, nor was I able to access a book that I wanted get started on for my classes. I went to work to get online there to access the internet to get caught up of different things going on.
If the world shut down the internet, would I survive? Yes, but it would be painful. I would have major adjustment to make. I am always amazed at how much of the internet use I take for granted when it goes out.
