While I was out in downtown Uijeoungbu yesterday, I finished off a roll of film with my small Diana camera. I have been working on this roll of film for several months now. It can only be used in day light and there were 72 half frame shots in the camera. Not every photograph is idea for this type of camera. I enjoyed shooting various things in the downtown area. I hope to post these photos once they are developed and sent back to me. The lesson I learned from the experience is that sometimes you just have to force it.
I hadn’t planned to take that camera yesterday. I, actually, planned to shoot with the DSLR but it mainly stayed in the backpack until the end of the trip. On a whim, I grabbed the Diana camera thinking I might get some use out of it. So, when I had a moment to spare I pulled it out to take a picture of a statue.
I forced it. The light seemed right, there was a subject to photograph and I had the time. So, I took the photo and began taking other photos to begin to wrap up the roll of film. About twenty photos later, I completed the roll. My goal was met and I think I have some interesting photos to look forward to.
This same principle of “forcing it” also works with writing. There are many times that I do not want to write. I have complete writers block. But, I have the time and a notebook—so I begin. By the time I have finished writing, I have a page or so down on paper. This happens nearly every time. So what is the cure for writer’s block? I truly believe that it begins with forcing it. Forcing my writing and allowing my mind to wander and to create.
