Studying genealogy has given me a better understanding of the human condition. Throughout history, humanity has struggled with sorrow. We continue to struggle with this even today. As much as we try to extend life, each one of us will die, and everyone we know will die. Not only will there be sorrow from death, there is also sorrow from a lost relationship or a lost job. Sometimes the sorrow is from a newly discovered health condition. Sometimes our sorrow comes from our own awareness of our sin and how that sin has impacted the lives of our loved ones. When we are in the midst of sorrow where do we turn to comfort?
In II Corinthians 1:3-5, the Bible says:
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.” (II Cor 1:3-5, ESV)
In sorrow, Jesus gives comfort. He provides this comfort abundantly and freely. All humanity understands the reality of sorrow. We all have this sorrow in common. No matter what the affliction, we can find comfort in Jesus today. As you go about your day today, what kind of sorrow are you having? Have you found comfort in Jesus? He will comfort us abundantly in all afflictions and we can cling to him today.
