Superman (VOL1) # 659 (FEB2007) is a strong story of faith. The character in the story, Barbara Johnson, had a faith that she believed that if she asked God, God would send in Superman to save the day. Understandably, this must be read in the context of a world that Superman did exist and could physically come and help her. Superman, as a result of her prayer, worried a little about this because he feared that he could not live up to her expectations. His perspective was that he was simply responding to calls of disaster–Johnson just happened to be there or planned to be there…repeatedly. Interestingly enough, Barbara Johnson’s prayers were answered–without the help of Superman.
I find in this story that because Johnson believed that God would help, she went to the danger to bring it to safety. Now, I’m not advocating going out and knocking on the Drug Dealer’s door. However, I am recommending that we begin placing more faith in God. We need to boldly place faith in Him…not simply saying “I believe” but boldly placing our lives and our issues in God’s hands. Isn’t that what faith is anyway? We can, then, allow God to work in those situations–not because we believed that we had a part, but rather God found the solutions and we were smart enough not to get in the way. That’s the faith that Barbara Johnson had in the story and a faith we need to have as well.
