Visiting the local restaurant is an exciting way to get out during the winter chill. I made a trip to the NuWay Drive-in on Saturday, just for that reason.
NuWay Drivein was opened in 1934 in downtown Leavenworth, Kansas and has nurtured a hometown reputation through the years as a great place for lunch and dinner. They offer a variety of menu items with the traditional drive in meals; hamburgers, hot dogs, fish, and salads. They also have a great reputation for milk shakes. I chose the fish to trick my mind into thinking that I was eating healthy. It was very tasty, but deep fried fish, probably isn’t considered a healthy diet option.
I enjoyed my visit to NuWay drive-in. I was impressed by the local feel that the inside contained. Many of the tables were full and there were several different groups who knew each other, but—as I have found in Kansas—I was not treated like as outsider. Come to think of it, I did get a couple of looks when I took a photo of my fish. The walls were lined with historical photos of the town, as well as photos of celebrities that had visited the restaurant. The seating area is small, but enough for the number of people that were eating there on a Saturday. It may get tight during the week from business people in the downtown area. The restaurant is, after all, a drive-in. So, there was a window that you can pull up to when you want to order your meal. There is not a fancy speaker, so you can just pull right up to the window and make your order.
I enjoyed my visit to NuWay and I am looking forward to trying out those milk shakes!
