Recently, we re-purposed our candy jar. In an effort to be more careful with snacking, I replaced my M&Ms jar with lollipops for the kids. We had a bag of them for Jenny and after Halloween, we were a little over run. The crazy thing is, we don’t eat much candy, so it will take forever to get rid of what we have. Especially, since we have the most of my least favorite lollipops–Dum-Dums. So, in this post, I will examine the round lollipops we have more closely.
First, there are the Dum-Dums. Invented in 1924 by the Spangler Company, the Dum-Dums consist of 36 favors. Outside of the fact that you can eat them quickly, there really isn’t a point to these lollipops at all. They don’t last long enough and there is no surprise in the middle. Interestingly enough, the Spangle Company has several different products, including the “Spangler Candy Canes” made across the border in Juarez, Mexico.
Another lollipop found in my jar are the “Charms Blow Pops“. These lollipops are produced by the Tootsie Roll Industries. In 1966, Thomas Tate Tidwell invented this hard shell lollipop with bubble gum in the center. I do enjoy the bubble gum in the center!
Then there is is my favorite–“Tootsie Roll Pops“. Like the “Charms Blow Pops”, Tootsie Roll Pops are hard shell lollipops with a surprise in the center. For the Tootsie Roll Pop, the center is Tootsie Roll Chocolate. The Tootsie Roll Pop was invented in 1930 by Lukas R. “Luke” Weisgram when Tootsie Roll Industries were named The Sweets Company of America. My favorite flavor is cherry–it offers the best flavor mix with the Tootsie Roll center.
Now, the jar is full of candy. But, we are limited to the abundance of Dum-Dums because the other brands get grabbed early. So, if you happen to stop by our candy jar make sure you pick up a lollipop!

Jim–
Thank you once again for reading. The 196th page is now at this address: http://www.dustyfile.com/196th-ashc-in-vietnam It is the same as chaplainandrews.com/196th-ashc-in-vietnam, but with the dustyfile.com replacing the chaplainandrews.com.
On September 18, 2013, I made some changes to my sites in response to being hacked and taking the opportunity to changing hosts and consolidating my sites under one heading. My biggest concern was how the 196th folks would find “their” post–but I had no way to communicate this change, except for the auto-referring of the page to dustyfile.com. I can assure you that this change is a permanent one and, unless unforeseen stuff happens, the page will not move again.
Again, thank you for reading and communicating through the website–I apologize for the confusion. Feel free to save the new location on your favorites to catch those who stumble on the post. And, as always, thank you for your service to our great country.

Hello Sir;
I don’t remember the Dum-Duns, maybe they didn’t supply them here in the NYC area, but the Tootsi Roll Pops were a fan favorite of my kids and I through the years. I had them when I was a kid in the 50’s, and my 2 sons loved them just as much in the 80’s. I think they may have contributed to all the cavities I had, but my sons never had a single one. Maybe the floride in the water helped to keep the younger generation away from the dentist.
We were wondering, do you still maintain the 196th web page, because none of us can find it anymore. Quite a few of us old 196th guy re-connected on that site, and it would be a shame if it was no longer with us.
Take care, and stay away from those lollie pops !!!
Jim
