This morning, Monica and I were joking about how she can multi-task. I typically can’t multitask at all. But, do I ever multitask…with anything?
Yes, there are times that I can multitask:
1. Sorting Comics: Today, I was sorting my shipment of comic books and closing the self-stick covers that Midtown Comics packs them in. While I was sorting those new books, I was listening to the police scanner. That is multitasking right?
2. Driving to Work: Each day when I drive to work, I listen to audible.com or a podcast. This gives me a chance to take in an hour of “reading” every day. This is a favorite time for multitasking.
3. Running: Running is thinking time for me. Occasionally, I listen to music, but most of the time, I use this time to think. I think about projects I am working on, blog posts, issues that need solutions, and world peace. There are some times that I have the world’s problems solved.
So, yes, I multitask. But, typically, the multitasking is a combination of a mundane function and a cerebral one. I like to take advantage of dull actions and give my mind a moment to process. What I cannot do is do two things that require my attention at one time. For instance, I cannot sort baseball cards and watch baseball. It seems funny, but sorting baseball cards requires putting numbers in order and baseball requires attention. I may have the game on, but the attention is not there.
Multitasking is hard for me. Some people can do it very well, so I’ve heard. However, this is not one of my strengths.
