Growing up, we played a game called “Freeze Tag”. Most of the little children in America have played this game of chasing one another around the playground until you are “tagged”, or touched, by the person who is “It”. When the person designated as “It” tags someone, that player must freeze and stop moving until another player comes by and “unfreezes” them with another tag. As we ran around the yard, there was always a place called “base” where all players were safe from being tagged.
The Bible says; “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.” (Proverbs 18:10 ESV) For many of us, we need a place to run to when the world is closing in on us. We need a place that will be safe. In many ways, the world is trying to get us to stop moving forward, to stop dodging its attacks, and if those fail to simply exhaust ourselves from running around in circles. That is when we need to run to the strong tower for safety.
The name of the Lord is that strong tower and we can rest in him. I have heard it said that religion is a crutch. Thankfully, calling on the name of Christ is a crutch to help us find the safety and healing we need. It is a crutch we cannot live without. Are you tired of running today? Do you need to find a safe place to rest? Run to the strong tower and he will give you rest.
